I have finally discovered the magic that is space saver bags. Either I'm not using them correctly or they totally over-exaggerate the demo pics, but I am still a satisfied customer of TV infomercial products. Maybe now I can bring along a good 3/4 of my closet to WI.
Packing up my life proves harder than I initially thought.
I've come to terms with the fact that I'm just not going to lose those six stubborn pounds I have left before I'm back to what I've deemed as 'normal' for me. Not at home, anyways. All those articles about diet tricks and health tips always stress a protein-packed breakfast. Sausage, I love. Eggs, yes please. Greek yogurt, trendy but still... except when there's something sweet (but not too sweet) to eat. Muffins are my weakness and I appreciate a good gourmet-like waffle piled high with fruits. So when there are baked goods in the house, my days only start one way.
This hazelnut pear muffin cake lasted a good two days before I woke up one morning and the pan was washed and dried and pristine. And all I felt was sad.
Adapted from one of my faves, Smitten Kitchen, I used 0.5c hazelnut meal instead of whole wheat flour, and dicing my pears was necessary because they were too ripe to grate. Thank you to the Thank You Basket from Adam that included the Bartletts that inspired me to finally use that hazelnut meal. And as luck would have it, my dad received a pack of roasted hazelnuts - from some visiting professor from Turkey.. who's Turkish.. who loves Turkey.. ? - that I had to chop up and sprinkle on top.

The immediate extended family is visiting and that also means a wonderful breakfast buffet waiting when us kids tumble downstairs. When you have a frozen pack of Pillsbury croissant dough and a Special Dark Hershey's bar, the only logical thing to do is combine them. Bam!Smoke!Magic! Hot and gooey chocolate croissants, and so easy. I ate six of those suckers today. I'll regret it in the morning... when I can drown my sorrows in some other dessert masquerading as a breakfast item.
At least this kid has been keeping me entertained. Between watching him watch Peppa Pig and cajoling him into the shallow end of the pool (and feeding him all of my snacks), I think I'm getting quite well-prepared for my future godmotherly duties, frands.
