Got up bright and early at 9am (because my alarm went off) for a hearty American brunch at the cutest breakfast place: Yolk. They had customized silly bands and baby bib merchandise - that's how cute it was.
Went with the French toast combo for like $9, which meant I could splurge on a fresh squeezed strawberry-orange juice at the recommendation of several Yelp users, because I couldn't decide between sweet and savory. It looks ordinary and classic, I know, but simple is best, and there was no question about whether I would be satisfied for the rest of the day (or my life). I was. No dinner needed (aside from the cheese and crackers at the welcome reception). I played a game of making every bite different - toast and sausage, toast and bacon, toast dipped in egg, toast and egg white, toast bacon egg, toast sausage egg, egg bacon... well you get the picture. With the last of the four pieces of French toast, I spread blackberry jam over it and ate it with the orange slice. So much happiness to be had - ain't nobody got time for conversation at brunch.
Stumbled upon Firecakes on a truncated shopping "spree," which was a suitable replacement for the Doughnut Vault (I'll just have to find you next time). Elliot and I split the coconut cream doughnut. It's the one that looks like it was dusted in snow flakes, with a mound of creamy snow shoveled over the center. All these fancy doughnut shops are making me rethink my previous instinct to stay away - but maybe it just applies to the glossy plastic day old ones found in gas station displays.
IFT welcome reception - where I was informed the food expo would be the size of seven football fields. And so the schedule planning began.
