backyard foraging

I was sitting on the beach in Hawaii earlier this year when I got a picture text of a giant tree in the corner of our backyard splintered and fallen over. The entire yard was blanketed by...tree, which collapsed a bench and added some dents here and there on the way down. Apparently it was a windy weekend. Anyways, after all the debris was cleared away, we were left with this giant stump. That eventually grew little tufts of branch hairs.
And then it sprouted mushrooms (probably after the random thunderstorm that passed over the Bay)! That we can apparently eat! Chicken of the woods!
Sauteed a sample ear in butter and garlic. Such a fun meaty texture.

Then sauteed another bigger ear for a scraps-charcuterie platter (fennel pollen sausage, apple walnut cheese, pickled carrots, peaches, saltines, cheddar bacon potato skins).
