Jinah had Jolly Pong cereal on the Cafe Quarantine menu, and to be honest, I wasn't sufficiently intrigued until I was at KP in search of black garlic, and I happened to pass by the cereal during my obligatory browse of the snack aisle.
You know, it doesn't feel right to be shoving my face with cereal while walking along the streets of Oakland anymore. I made it about one block before deciding maybe I should tuck the opened bag back into my grocery bag.
Well that was several days ago. So many other random food distractions later, I'm finally eating a bowl of JP for lunch with oat milk and a couple spoonfuls of strawberry syrup.
Every time I have cereal and milk, I forget how fucking good cereal and milk is. Any cereal, any [plant-based] milk. The reason why I don't keep cereal in the home is the same reason why I don't keep chips in the home - I'll sit there motionless and eat until I can tip the final crumbs down my throat like a monster. Kind of like what I did after this bowl of cereal that I cradled in bed in my underwear. Finished the rest of the bag with the spoon.
I remember when I was in Gothenburg having breakfast with my host and another guest from Germany, they launched into a story of disbelief of once witnessing an American snack on a box of cereal...without the milk. Their bewilderment was hilarious to me because sinfully sugary cereal was made to be eaten directly by the handful. (Honestly, even bland cereal... my obsession with plain Cheerios around the preteen years knew no bounds.) Bonus points if after polishing off a box, you stand up and find cereal under your butt, tucked in the creases of your shirt, and stuck to the underside of your multiplying chins.
By the way, Contentious Interwebs, I'm a cereal into the bowl first kinda gal.
Had a couple catch-up calls and finally took a yummy cat nap under the sun on the living room couch, so I really couldn't get it together to make food until dinner time. And even then it was as low maintenance as possible.
A bowl of toasted rice with TJ's super seeds and ancient grains topped with hojicha syrup soy egg, chashu turnips, KP's stir fried anchovies, and Joyce's chili oil. And a leaf of cilantro for some color and veg.
Eaten while considering how everyone in these teen drama shows is so attractive.
