strive for five

Now is the time to realize all my baking dreams. Within reason. Because the only dairy products I have in the home are stacks on stacks of butter and powdered milk. [Currently brainstorming how to bypass the need/want for buttermilk for biscuits hmmm...]. And in case I didn't explicitly say it: I'm not going to the store until April 7. For the hell-of-it/challenge. I think I can do it. But this means I will have to contend with the day I run out of perishables and will no longer have fresh veggies to eat. Will this obliterate my digestive system? Only time will tell.

Anyways. I made mini croissants. It was a two day process.

And I'm decently satisfied with the layers + the flakey outside + the chewy inside. But the dough didn't rise enough. So I'm not satisfied enough. So... I know what I'm doing next week...
Recipe from Sally.
But I subbed in 50g of my [still unnamed] sourdough starter for 25g flour+25g water,
used water instead of milk because of the no dairy products problem,
added 1T vegemite + 1scoop Vital proteins collagen peptides into the butter.

Mmmyum. Still have more than half a jar of vegemite from my study abroad days.

Had one for breakfast with a bungled sunny side up egg and a hilariously small portion of water spinach leftovers and a packet of sambal oelek from my container of misc sauce packets (shhh, I know I have a food hoarding problem okay?!).
Eaten while meeting all my high school friend-in-laws.

Meanwhile, I dug up some dried lotus seeds and gogi berries in one of my pantry boxes and decided to make a giant thing of tea with it the rest of my loose leaf green tea because I wanted and needed another beverage option.
Current count of cups holding unique bevvies in my bedroom: four.

I was still in my PJs (honestly do I even need to specify this? shouldn't we just all assume we are all perpetually in our PJs now) when lunch rolled around so I crawled back under my weighted blanket to eat this leftover miso risotto reworked with Xi'an spiced mushrooms and remainder of egg wash from the croissants (stop rolling your eyes... it honestly made the rice even creamier) and the last of the Chinese broccoli.
Eaten while welcoming Alicia back to DC to quarantine in her parents' basement with her sister.

Just realizing I had three different meals for the first time today (progress) because dinner was chicken + green bean leftovers from yesterday, classily eaten out of a recycled take out container while being serenaded by Justin and Jinah.
Jazz night themed cocktail of the night was cognac + grand marnier + splash of Squirt + preserved lemon peels + topped with lemon club soda + dash of bitters. Dranken gingerly because I somehow found a reason to put on lipstick in quarantine.

Beeteedubs, today was my second time attempting croissants. The last time (about 2.5 years ago) resulted in crescent shaped bread rolls basically.
Look at this funny wart-bubble on the dough.
Kimchi croissants from Christina Tosi's Momofuku Milk Bar.

Okay, third time's the charm...
